Flipboard中国 – The Killer iPad App is Coming (back) to China

Flipboard found itself in the spotlight in 2010 as it was named Apple iPad’s App of the Year after turning the iPad into a personalized digital magazine, pulling content from users’ social networks and other websites. Unfortunately, it also caught China’s attention, which didn’t like the content it was collecting. Flipboard’s ability to circumvent the Great Firewall of China, providing uncensored access to Facebook and ‘banned’ media, led to it being blocked in May.

Flipboard wasn’t happy and CEO Mike McCue publicly vented on Twitter:

Since then, Flipboard has persevered through the release of Chinese clones in its absence and continued to develop its app, releasing new features during the last few weeks. However, this hasn’t meant much to users in China, until now.

A recently circulated job vacancy indicates Flipboard is on its way back (see below) to the Middle Kingdom. Based on its initial ban, users shouldn’t expect to access Facebook or other content deemed a risk to ‘ideological security’ through the relaunched app. But there are also rumors of Flipboard partnering with Sina Weibo, which should localize its content.

Flipboard does not confirm its return to China, with spokesperson Christel van der Boom stating there are “no firm plans as to which country we’ll go to first,” though she did acknowledge they “have a large international base and internationalizing is a priority.”

While Flipboard is poised to come back strongly when it does officially move ahead, it also has its work cut out as Chinese clone Zaker has already integrated Sina Weibo, Google Reader, and a healthy host of Chinese content. Other social magazine apps have taken similar steps in hope of gaining a market share with tech powerhouses Netease and Tencent launching their own apps, which integrate their respective Weibo (microblog) channels. Despite these offerings, what seems like an open market now will be much tougher for competitors once the original market leader returns.
